This poll asked about preservation-related books in thirteen categories. PlaceEconomics colleagues suggested books within each category to constitute the survey, but for every question there was also an opportunity for survey respondents to suggest books they felt should be included in that category. Respondents were asked to rate the books on the following scale: 1 = Poor; 2 = Fair; 3 = Good; 4 = Very Good; 5 = Excellent. The option “I don’t know this book” was the alternative choice. There was also a fourteenth, open-ended question for survey respondents to identify books they felt should be in a preservation library. Your bookshelf needs to be large, as nearly 100 additional books were recommended. The diversity of interest areas, perspectives, scholarship, and opportunities in historic preservation make it an interesting and ever-evolving field within which we individually have the ongoing opportunity to grow. A book or two from these lists can help us do that.
